NAD+ is not only the source of our life, providing energy to cells for normal operation and gene repair; recent clinical research has shown that NAD+ also gives cells enough resilience to fight against foreign viral infections, reducing the damage caused by foreign viruses to the body.

The study found in cells and animal tissues infected with the coronavirus and COVID-19 that the attack of the COVID-19 virus on cells causes NAD+ levels to rapidly decline, simultaneously triggering a strong demand in the body for NAD+ to fight the invasion of foreign viruses. The study found that supplementing the body's NAD+ levels can enhance the body's immunity to the coronavirus and other viral infections. Infected cells will continuously consume NAD+ in an attempt to resist the virus; meanwhile, the virus will attempt to hinder the body's immune resistance and massively reproduce the virus through another set of genes.

The study was jointly conducted by three American universities, University of Iowa, Oregon Health & Science University, and University of Kansas, and found that coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, greatly disrupt the body's NAD+ balance. Coronaviruses deplete and suppress the normal levels of NAD+ in the human body by utilizing multiple different PARP genes, and NAD+ is an essential part of maintaining innate immune responses and fighting against viruses. The study found that in the lung tissues of those who unfortunately died from COVID-19, the coronavirus caused a significant decrease in NAD+, preventing the body from producing more NAD+ and weakening the body's ability to fight against the virus. In other words, our immune mechanism to resist external pressures (a variety of physiological stresses), including viral invasions (viral infections), loses function. The data shows that preventing the massive loss of NAD+ or increasing the body's NAD+ levels are both very beneficial to cells, and more research will follow. In addition to hijacking our immune mechanisms, COVID-19 coronaviruses also release a large amount of pro-inflammatory molecules in the later stages to attack the lungs, causing some patients to develop fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome. The study shows that NAD+ plays a very important role in balancing the immune system, regulating Sirtuins to coordinate the transmission of messages such as pro-inflammatory molecules.

On April 20, 2020, Dr. Robert J. Huizenga from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, USA, published a medical report on the treatment of a severe COVID-19 patient, who showed significant clinical improvement after oral NMN treatment. The patient, who developed severe inflammation and breathing difficulties and required a respiratory device 11 days after diagnosis, was immediately sent to the aforementioned hospital. The doctor prescribed NMN treatment for two consecutive days, successfully improving the patient's respiratory problems and increasing the white blood cell count in the body within 12 hours. Within 36 hours, the patient's blood oxygen level and body temperature returned to normal levels, and the inflammation gradually subsided. The patient was discharged on the 17th day and fully recovered by the 23rd day. NMN treatment was also used in two other elderly confirmed COVID-19 patients, with significant clinical improvements in fever, chest pressure, cough, headache, and low energy issues recorded within 36-48 hours.
